If you’re not exactly sure how many feet of anything you need, you could end up with too many hardwood planks or worse yet, kitchen cabinets that don’t quite cover the space they need to. That wastes money, time and effort.
In order to measure for kitchen cabinets, you need to calculate what’s called the linear feet. Pricing is often set per linear foot. To do this, measure the length of all your cabinets, top and bottom. Include top cabinets that run over appliances. If you have a corner section with rotating shelves, that counts as two linear feet. Tall cabinets, such as pantries, count as twice their width. Write every measurement down as soon as you take it and add it up carefully.
In order to measure the amount of flooring you need, multiply the width and length of the room together. This gives you square feet, which is how flooring is priced. Don’t eyeball it; use a tape measure. Get an assistant to hold one end of the tape measure for you.
Other things to keep track of are exactly how many cabinet doors and drawers you have (how many of each type of nob and handle you will need), and the specs on any of your appliances. You don’t want to purchase a stove or a refrigerator that’s too large for the space! Don’t measure the appliance, but the area between one countertop and the other, or between the counter and the wall.
